NEW BEGINNINGS

Saturday evening, after attending a party for a couple to be married in a few months, Cissy and I drove to The Reserve at Lake Keowee, South Carolina. I was invited to be the guest minister on Sunday morning for the first worship service to be held in the community.

The Reserve is a 3,900-acre private community with about 30 miles of shoreline on the 18,500-acre Lake Keowee in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The vision of the developers is to build a family friendly place with quality homes and amenities. Construction began about seven years ago.

We were hosted in a beautiful guesthouse for the night and woke up to see the beauty of this marvelous place. The center of the community is the Village with a great lawn surrounded by homes and golf course with clubhouse, lakeside with pool and marina, small shops, and a chapel.

Just seven weeks ago God stirred the heart of a resident to solicit other neighbors to start a multi-denominational worship service. Quickly doors were literally opened, that included the dedication in July of a facility the developer built for the community.

Called Founder's Hall, the impressive structure is a multi-purpose building that clearly looks inside and out like a place of worship. Last week a Steinway piano arrived. A resident fashioned a cross out of rough lumber that can be placed in the window. The first hymn sung in the worship service was “The Old Rugged Cross.”

Word about the first worship service was spread around the community via email blasts and word of mouth. With great joy when the worship service began every seat was filled, chairs were added, and people sat on the steps leading to the balcony. Over 100 people joined in the closing hymn “How Great thou Art.”

The whole morning experience was “WOW!” It was incredible to see how God is moving among this excited, attentive, warm and friendly people.

Afterward Cissy and I were treated to a delightful lunch at a friend’s home. Later we had a relaxing boat outing that included a wild ride being towed behind the boat on a flotation device.

Later in the day on the way home we stopped at Whitewater Falls, then ate some good N.C. mountain barbeque, and rode through Highlands, N.C., one of my favorite towns.
