TEXAS TRIP

Last week Cissy and I went to Houston for a few days. The main purpose was to go to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for Cissy to get a MRI and review the results with her physician. It has been three years since she had surgeries for a malignant brain tumor. The results were excellent so we will not return for another year. Praise God!

We rented a car and visited some great places. First we went to Johnson Space Center. It was surprising to see Texas longhorns on the campus. NASA and a local school district have some sort of joint project to raise cattle. The visitor center and tram tour with walks through buildings was fascinating. We saw the historic mission control room, training room with mockups of different space equipment, and exhibits with actual capsules from the Mercury and Gemini projects. Everything was all the more interesting since a space walk on the shuttle was happening while we were there. For many, many multiple times I tried to land the shuttle with a computor simulation but crashed every time.

We drove down the road just a few miles to Kelah, an area on the Gulf Bay with marina, boardwalk, amusement park, and restaurants. Cissy declined to ride the roller coaster so I rode solo … before we ate!

Mmmmm!... over the days we ate a lot of great food. We ate seafood at Kelah. Twice we went to Guadalajara, our favorite Mexican food restaurant in Houston. As usual we enjoyed the breakfast buffet at the Rotary House hotel that adjoins the Cancer Center.

On Friday we drove four hours up to Fort Worth. I had not been there in over 30 years since I graduated from seminary. We enjoyed walking around the campus and stopping at the apartment where I lived for three years. Of course, there was a meal time so we went to Pancho’s Mexican Buffet. Many times during seminary days I gorged on the $1.49 all-you-can-eat. It now costs about $7.49, but the sopaipillas filled with honey are just as good as ever.
