MOUNTAIN COLORS

Several weeks ago my wife Cissy and I spent a few days in the North Carolina mountains. The purpose was two-fold: to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary and to see the fall colors. After our hot and dry weather we wondered if there would be much color this year. We were delightfully pleased by what we saw.

We stopped near Bryson City at Nantahala Village for a few minutes. Cissy spent several family vacations there almost fifty years ago. The swimming pool was still there but most everything else has changed a good bit.

We drove along the Blue Ridge Parkway and were enthralled by the beautiful leaf colors from Cherokee to Mt. Pisgah. Favorite vistas along the way are Richland Balsam (highest point on Parkway at 6047 feet), Devil’s Courthouse, Graveyard Fields, Looking Glass Rock, and Cold Mountain.

We stayed at the historic Lambuth Inn at Lake Junaluska. Our room overlooked the lake, which we walked around several times.

A gorgeous discovery for us was Cataloochee Ranch at Maggie Valley. This 1000 acre ranch, situated on a ridge at 5000 feet, adjoins the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
