GRADUATION

Today we attended a really important event. Olivia, our five-year old granddaughter, graduated from preschool!

Her class processed into the sanctuary of Roswell Presbyterian Church. Cameras were clicking like crazy as proud moms and dads and grandparents captured the moment. After the opening prayer the young graduates treated us to a collection of songs.

Selections included, “Skidmarink,” “Alligator in the Elevator,” “Little Wheel A-Turn’,” “Sally the Camel,” “Somebody’s Knocking at Your Door,” and “Make Your Friends.” Appropriately, the grand finale was “Oh, We’re Ready to Go Off to Kindergarten.”

After turning their tassel simultaneously (yes, this was a cap and gown service), each child received their diploma and recessed up the aisle. Afterwards, cake and sparkly punch was a treat for all.

During refreshment time, Merrily, Olivia’s one-year old sister was enchanted by all the attention of Olivia’s girlfriends. They serenaded her with the tune, “Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.” One of the young five-year olds explained about Merrily, “she was named after the song.”

At the family “graduation luncheon” at Chick-fil-A, Cissy presented Olivia with a graduation gift bag.

How times have changed. I don’t think preschool had been invented when I was a kid. Even though public kindergarten had not been invented either – at least where I lived, we did have private kindergarten.

A lady in our neighborhood had a kindergarten in the basement of her home. I expect for us on the last day of school, she simply said, “good luck,” and I walked home by myself.

Note in the photos Olivia is not all prissy pink. She is sporting a pirate tattoo on her forearm!
