S.A.M.

Tonight Cissy and I attended a program at our church sponsored by SAM (Senior Adult Ministry). The SAM group is for folks “55 or taller.” Since we had the first installment of Cissy’s birthday celebrations last night (see prior blog entry), we decided she could qualify to attend. Our dear friend Jane Starke also joined us.

Jennell Bryan, the SAM staff leader at our church, put together a wonderful dinner and meal for over 150 people. The delicious catered meal included beef tips, chicken, rice, green beans, carrots, broccoli casserole, bread, and cobbler for dessert.

The feature of the evening was a presentation by
Ed Kilbourne. His fame, after making 8000-plus solo appearances over 40 years, is to sing moving music with an acoustic guitar, mixed with clever humor and insightful monologues.

Tonight he entranced and enthralled the crowd with his mellow voice. He gently led us to learn and sing along with him a beautiful melody about love. He mused about the possibility of Jesus telling jokes. The audience was roused to raise their hands and shout “hallelujah” while he sang a song called, “The Mississippi Squirrel Revival.”

The song “Howard Gray” told the haunting story of a boy not standing up for a friend who was taunted by classmates. As well as telling other stories and singing varied songs, Ed’s rendition of “Silent Night” gave a special seasonal touch to the evening.

To close the evening we heard two selections played by the “Hilltop Strummers.” This group is composed of SAM participants who gather weekly at the church to play their dulcimers.
