Since schools were closed for Election Day, my grandchildren Olivia, Ethan, and Merrily spent the afternoon with me. We started out with each choosing their “weapon” of choice for working in the woods.
Ethan and I chose machetes, while Olivia picked some loppers which she called choppers. It seemed best for 3 year old Merrily to have a safer tool, so she chose a plywood board that she called a brick. We whacked our way through the woods. Merrily would stop at each sizable tree and hold her board against it, and she said she needed a hammer.
When we approached a clearing where I had put up a rope swing, every one got a turn flying into space. Merrily flew past the moon, Ethan felt comfortable going as far as Jupiter, and Olivia zoomed to Uranus.
Cissy called on my cell phone when she arrived home from school. In a few minutes “Gammy” brought us our favorite snack --- Breyer’s mint chocolate chip ice cream and Oreo cookies. Then we climbed some trees, threw rocks in the creek, and patted the horses next door. For break time we headed back to the house and watched a movie.
Cissy had already committed herself to attending another grandson’s last baseball game of the season, so I told the young’uns home by myself. I was not disappointed when I arrived at their home for dinner. We dined on steak filets, tossed salad, twice-baked potatoes, and chocolate meringue pie for dessert. Cissy was fortunate that I brought some pie home for her.
Thank God for fun of Play Day … ‘cuz watching election returns has not been a happy time for me.
