CIVIL FORUM

I watched with great interest last Saturday evening the Saddleback Civil Forum with host Rick Warren and the presidential candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama. The questions asked were forthright and in general the candidates gave candid answers. Based on the responses and the positions, John McCain is clearly my candidate of choice. I realize perhaps 50% of America would disagree with me.

Yesterday afternoon I was listening to an old message on my ipod. The speaker was J. Oswald Sanders and his topic was the maturity of a spiritual leader. Two principles he drew from the Apostle Paul’s first letter to Timothy (specifically, chapter 3, verses 1-10) about the qualifications for church leaders I think are relevant to any type of leadership, and certainly this presidential contest:

1. He must not be a neophyte.
2. He must be tested.

After being thrust on the national stage only at the last Democratic presidential convention, and now serving his first term in the U.S. Senate, Barack Obama does not impress me as a candidate who has the knowledge, experience, or skill to serve our country as President.
