The guys had a great time visiting with each other when they arrived. Even after we had some music and stories, many stayed for another hour or more. One of our talented men led us with some lively singing with his guitar and voice. Another shared a life-changing experience he had in a jail cell.
Then I told “The First Settler’s Story” by Will Carlton about life in the Old West & taming something wilder than fire. It took me over 35 minutes to recite the story verbatim with over 3,000 words.
Below is the heart of the message of the story.
Boys flying kites haul in their white-winged birds:
You can’t do that way when you’re flying words.
“Careful with fire,” is good advice we know:
“Careful with words,” is ten times doubly so.
Thoughts unexpressed may sometimes fall back dead,
But God himself can’t kill them when they’re said!
