BIBLES TO BEATLES

Yesterday my experiences ranged from an exhibit of Bibles from China and extended to a Beatles tribute band. The group performed in Canton, Georgia, a small but dynamic American city, whose name was inspired by Canton, China.

I attended the opening ceremony for The Bible Ministry Exhibition of the Church in China at the Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta.

Former President Jimmy Carter was a featured speaker. He recalled his first trip to China over 56 years ago while in the Navy. Then he recounted his meetings with Chinese leaders during his presidency that stimulated more freedom of worship and printing of Bibles in China.

The exhibit noted the efforts of missionaries in Bible translation, particularly in the 19th century. Many of the displays highlighted the progress in printing and distributing Bibles since 1980. A fascinating section was the display of Christian artwork by Chinese believers to express their faith. Live performers shared traditional Chinese music.

In some ways the exhibit seemed like impressive propaganda about freedom of religion in China. Displays noted the horror of persecution during the cultural revolution. Hopefully the exhibit signals stronger and deeper relationships between Chinese Christians and the outside world will be permitted and encouraged.

This evening I enjoyed “The Return,” a Beatles tribute band. As their website notes, “The young musicians have carefully and skillfully recreated the Beatles experience by not only performing all the great songs of the original four, but also by sporting the same suits, boots, mop-tops, musical instruments, and gear.”

Though I have never been a great fan of the Beatles, as the group sang song after song, I realized anew the great impact of this group on me and millions around the world. I found myself singing along with virtually every song, due to the memorable lyrics and tunes.

The Bible exhibit and Beatle tribute concert impressed me with the power of art to communicate to the soul. I am thankful the Chinese believers are communicating the truth of the Gospel.
